Essex - Charles Karoly Erdelyi, 83, a long-time resident of Essex passed away at his home in Williston on Wednesday May 5, 2021. He was born in Rakoscsaba, Hungary May 1, 1938, son of the late Karoly and Rozalia (Lanc) Erdelyi.

A refugee from the Hungarian revolution, Charlie came to the US in 1957 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1963. He was a very loyal and dedicated family man and kept close relationships with his Hungarian family and friends throughout his lifetime.

As the first college-educated member of his family, he was very proud to study Electrical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and of his multiple Master’s Degrees. He had a long and distinguished career at IBM. His ingenuity and creativity led to several patents. He enthusiastically applied his creative engineering skills to household repairs and projects.

He loved music and passed that love on to his children and grandchildren. He could play almost any melody by ear on the violin, enjoyed playing clarinet with the “Little German Band” in Raleigh, NC, and was a long-time member of the choir of the Holy Family Church in Essex Junction, VT. He also enjoyed sailing, travel and fishing in the surf of North Carolina.

Charlie was also predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years Judith Erdelyi and his Father-in Law and Mother-in-Law Douglas and Catherine Waugh.

He is survived by his sister Erzsebet “Babu” Bolla (Gabor Bolla); four children: Elizabeth “Lisa” Marcus (John Marcus); Joseph Erdelyi (Lauren Aldrich); Julia Erdelyi (Joe Beliveau); John Erdelyi (Tracy Erdelyi); 10 grandchildren: Sarah Marcus, Dan Marcus, Katie Erdelyi, Alex Erdelyi, Jordan Erdelyi, Marley Pratt, Averil Beliveau, Aliza Beliveau, Morgan Erdelyi, Andrew Erdelyi, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Uncle Karcsi was a great man. An exceptionally smart, loving, caring, charming man. He is deeply mourned by his sister, brother-in-law, nephew and family in Hungary. His memory will be cherished with love. We've uploaded some old photos of his cheerful spirit.

It was great knowing you. Whether analyzing analog circuits, visiting Cray on a sales call, or borrowing your chainsaw, I valued your help. With your kindness and good nature, you made the world a better place. You had fascinating tales of your journey through life. I'm glad we were able to keep in touch through Jim's IBM retiree lunches, pre-Covid at JP's and recently over Zoom. We will miss you.
