Dwane Austin, age 83, passed away at The McLure/Miller Respite House on August 27th , 2020 following a long battle with COPD. He was born on March 21, 1937 in Orleans, Vt, the son of Gordon and Ida (Lathe) Austin.

After graduating from Orleans High School in 1955, he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for 20 years. In 1962 he married Shirley (Hoyt), also of Orleans and they have one son, Mark.

He thoroughly enjoyed military life and his 20 years of service took him and his family to many areas of the country - Quonset Point, R.I., Rota Spain, Norfolk, Va., and Pensacola, Fla., where he worked with the Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration team.

Proud of his Vermont heritage, upon his retirement in 1975 there was no question that he would retire in Vermont and he and his family moved to Jericho where they still reside. For the next 23 years he served as custodian at Browns River Middle School, retiring from there in 1998.

“Yard work” was his relaxation and he could be found on any nice day, mowing and trimming his lawn and engaging in conversation with anyone who happened by.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his son, Mark and wife Jackie, of Hinesburg, Vt. And several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Avis, Evelyn and Wanita and his brother, Dale.

In accordance with his wishes there will be no services at this time. Donations in his memory can be made to Essex Rescue, 1 Educational Dr., Essex Jct., Vt. 05452 or UVM Home Health/Hospice at 1110 Prim Rd., Colchester, Vt 05446.

Dear Shirley: Sharon and I extend our most sincere condolences to you and your family on Dwane’s passing.

Dwane was a unique and special person and we are so grateful that he became a part of our personal and professional lives. I learned so much from him in terms of his professional pride in one’s job, his tenacity, perseverance and frugality as he went about his job at school.

In all of my years as an administrator, no one did a better job of keeping our school safe and inviting for the children than Dwane. He poured his heart and soul into our school. We will be forever grateful to him for all of his hard work and dedication to Browns River Middle School.

Shirley, you have been a steadfast and loving wife to Dwane. As Dwane’s health started to regress , you have been by his side helping him meet his significant health challenges with out fail. No one could have done more to help Dwane’s with his health issues than you.
Please take solace in the fact, that you helped Dwane make the most of his time on this earth.

We are sad for his passing, but I treasure my eighteen years at school with him. I am so happy that I was able to walk beside him, side by side, on this earth. I will truly miss him.

May he Rest In Peace.

With our heartfelt and sincere sympathy,

Paul and Sharon Corologos

Dear Shirley and family,
Folks who don't work in school systems seldom realize the many roles played by a school custodian. Dwane was one of those exceptional people at the Underhill I.D. school who went beyond his job description to be a teacher, mentor and friend to the students there. When our son was in kindergarten, he spent many parts of the day out in the hallway. Mr. Austin became a dear friend whom he came to trust and who taught him important lessons about responsibility and kindness. We will always be grateful for thoughtfulness, perception, and the gifts of his kind attention. You may be sure that, with all the years Dwane spent in the school, there are many more families and students who remember him with fondness.
