Ellen Granetz Rose passed away on September 8, 2026, at her home in St. Albans, Vermont. Details regarding a Celebration of Life are to be determined.

Ellen was born on April 21, 1954, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to Adeline (Bampe) and Lester Granetz. She attended Somerville High School in New Jersey and graduated from Lesley College before beginning her career as a special educator. Her very first job was at Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center teaching a particularly difficult class of behaviorally challenged students, winning their respect. She next taught at Academy School in Brattleboro, Vermont, resulting in her receiving the Vermont Teacher of the Year award. Later, she earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies at the University of Vermont before becoming a special educator in the Colchester School District. The final decades of her career, 1989-2018, Ellen was a special educator in the kindergarten of the St. Albans City elementary school. The outpouring of tributes since her passing demonstrate how admired Ellen was by students, parents and fellow teachers for her skills, compassion and generosity.

Ellen was a talented weaver and enjoyed visiting yarn stores here, there and everywhere. She sold her handiwork at the Farmers Market in Taylor Park and other venues. Her scarves, table runners, mug rugs, and baby blankets are prized possessions of many.

Ellen leaves behind her husband, Michael, whom she married in 1988. She is also survived by her daughter Sara (Mike) Pine, son Samuel (Eliza) Rose, grandson Owen, who brightened her last months, and sisters Susan (Jerry) Simon, Nancy Pretsfelder and Erica (Joshua) Lowitz. Ellen loved, and will be missed by, her nephews, nieces, cousins and aunt and her many dear friends.

Ellen lives on “in the acts of goodness she performed and in the hearts of those who cherish her memory.”
