Evelyn May Hathaway, 89, of Burlington, VT, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on August 19,2026. 

She was born May 31, 1937,  in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, the daughter of Margaret Donley Dufalt and Wilrose Dufault Sr. Though born in Canada, she was raised in Burlington, VT,  which she considered home.

She Married Richard “Richie” Toris, and together they had three children, Chris, Michael and Kathy. The family made their home in Haverstraw, NY for several years. She later returned to VT, where life brought back together with her childhood sweetheart, Herbert “Dick” Hathaway. The two found love with one another again and were later married, sharing many happy years together.

She worked for her brother at Willy’s Vending Service, where she served as Office Manager for many hears. She late found a calling especially suited to her warm and caring nature as a preschool teacher at St. Joseph’s School, where she remained until her retirement.

She truly loved children and children loved her in return. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, play Yahtzee, cards and take car rides through the countryside.

She is survived by her children, Chris and Kathy, stepchildren; their spouses; her brother Willy and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Though there are many, each one held a special place in Evelyn’s heart and was deeply loved by her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Wilrose Dufault Sr., her husband Herbert “Dick” Hathaway; her first husband Richard “Richie” Toris; her son Michael Toris’ her brother Arnold Dufault and her stepdaughter, Denise Paya.

Evelyn’s family is especially grateful for her stepdaughter, Chris Raymond, whose love, devotion and care brought comfort and companionship to Evelyn through the last several years of her life.

The inurnment for Evelyn, along with her predeceased husband, Herbert (Dick), will be held on Saturday, October 3rd at 12:00 p.m. in the family lot in Malletts Bay Cemetery, 903 West Lakeshore Dr., Colchester, VT 05446.
