Timothy A Sargent Obituary
Timothy A Sargent of Montpelier died unexpectedly on July 22, 2026 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vermont. He was born on November 27, 1949 to Frank and Jane Sargent in San Juan, Puerto Rico where his father was serving in the United States Army.
Tim’s early years were spent in various locales where his family was stationed, including New York, Pennsylvania, Japan, Kentucky and Virginia. He attended elementary and junior high school in Fairfax, Virginia. In 1964 the family moved to Northfield, Vermont where Tim graduated from Northfield High School in 1968.
After high school, Tim attended Defiance College in Ohio where he met his future wife Deborah Roberts Sargent. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Goddard College and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from St. Michael’s College. Tim began his career in Human Services with the State of Vermont followed by a long and distinguished career as a psychotherapist in private practice in Randolph and Montpelier, Vermont.
Tim was a gifted counselor, his empathetic and pragmatic approach to helping others was a hallmark of both his professional and personal life. A deeply caring individual, he shared his insight, understanding and compassion with everyone around him.
Tim and Deborah raised two sons, Zachariah D. Sargent of Waitsfield, Vermont and Jeremiah B. Sargent of Montpelier, Vermont.
Later in life, Tim met and fell in love with his soulmate, Larry Sherwin, with whom he lived for more than 20 years until Larry’s death in 2020.
Traveling with his family was very meaningful to Tim. Adventures thru the U.S., Europe, Australia and Latin America were priceless.
Tim’s other interests included acting in local and summer stock theater, going to the movies, reading and playing mahjong. Most precious to him was spending time with close friends and family.
Tim was a kind, honest, joyful man whose wit and outstanding sense of humor were among the many highlights of his personality. He will be remembered fondly as dear, sweet, genuine and steady by the people he knew, guided and loved throughout his life.
He leaves his sons, Zach and Miah (Vanessa), his grandchildren, Camillo and Iliana, of Montpelier, his former wife, Debbie of Montpelier, his brothers, Larry (Pat) of Taos, New Mexico and Brent (Reenie) of Duxbury, Vermont and their families, his nieces and nephews, his beloved cousins in Pennsylvania and beyond, his mahjong family, and his many friends—all of whom will miss him dearly.
