James Martin Heald, 80, passed away on July 26, 2026, at the University of Vermont Medical Center surrounded by his loving family following a long illness caused by a debilitating disease.

Jim was born on September 12, 1945, in St. Albans, Vermont. On November 30th, 1968 he married the love of his life Diane VanDusen where they resided in Stowe Vt.   He spent his life in Vermont, building a career, serving his community, and creating lasting connections with the people around him.

Jim began his working years as a barber at Stowe Village, where he worked for many years. In 1971, he moved to Burlington, Vermont, where he began his career as a full-time National Guard Technician. Jim first served at Goss Court Army Facility and later at Camp Johnson in Colchester, Vermont, where he worked as a payroll clerk. He dedicated many years to the Vermont National Guard before retiring in 2005.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Diane (VanDusen) Heald, who stood by his side throughout their marriage and provided care and support for many years as his health declined.

He is also survived by his loving and devoted daughters, Terry Heald Jewett and her husband, Marc Jewett of Eden, Vt and Tammy Heald Benoit and her husband, Brian E. Benoit of Georgia, Vermont.

Jim leaves behind his grandchildren who affectionally called him Pepa.  Macie and Steven Whitaker, along with their children Camden, Colby, and Bennett of Essex, Vermont; Destiny White and her partner, Isaac Dezotelle, along with their son, Maverick, and their soon-to-be-born daughter, Kennedy, of Belvidere, Vermont, whom Jim (Pepa) was very excited to meet; and Mary Benoit and her partner, Griffin Osborne, of Barre, Vermont.

In 2012, Jim entered Green Mountain Nursing Home, where he was cared for by a dedicated staff who became an important part of his life. Their kindness, compassion, and commitment provided Jim with comfort and support over the years. His family will always be grateful for the care they provided and for the way they welcomed him as part of their extended family.

Jim's life reflected dedication to his work, his family, and the communities he was part of. From his years as a barber at Stowe Village to his service with the Vermont National Guard, he made lasting connections and contributed to the lives of many people.

He will be remembered by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, caregivers, and all those who knew him.

Per Jim's wishes, services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
