Obituary for George C. Forsey

George C. Forsey, 83, passed away on October 21st, 2023, with his wife and family by his side at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont. He was born on January 13th, 1940. George grew up in Jericho, VT, and graduated from Jericho High School in 1958. He ran cross country and played basketball. He joined the Vermont Air National Guard in 1959 and years later retired as a Staff Sergeant. In 1960, he married Phyllis Bixby and together they raised four children on his in-laws’ dairy farm and later in a home he built in a field near the Browns River in Westford, VT.

George was an avid outdoorsman, spending cherished time with his children snowshoeing, canoeing, hunting deer, rabbit, and partridge, and fishing all seasons in the brooks, rivers, and lakes of the Champlain Valley. He and Phyllis enjoyed traveling to Montreal for concerts and together they could cut quite a rug. They also enjoyed bowling together. He volunteered for the Westford Little League coaching his sons’ baseball teams. He was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play, and hearing about their accomplishments in school, on the field, court, and dance stage. He enjoyed playing cards, trivia games, chess, vegetable gardening, reading, drawing, a good joke, the History channel, and listening to all genres of music from Willie Nelson to Andre Rieu.

For many years, he proudly worked as an electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 300, traveling all over the country from Maine to California. In 1996 while on the road in Kansas City, MO he survived a major stroke, returned to the hills of Vermont, retired, and with grit and dry wit overcame additional health complications with the unyielding support and care of his wife, and his daughter, Michelle, with whom he lived during the last few years of his life.

He leaves his devoted wife of 63 years, Phyllis; his son Michael (Brenda) Forsey of Westford, VT, his daughter Michelle McMahon of Essex, VT, and his daughter Jennifer (Michael) McGuinness of Northwood, NH; his grandchildren Jaida Driscoll, Brandi (Tyler) Broe, Nicole (Shane) Leggett, Mikayla Forsey, Natalie McMahon, Saere McGuinness, and Nathan McMahon; great grandchildren Saige, Mckenzie, and Marshall; a sister Molly Page; nephews Patrick Widrig, Bruce (Wendy) Garrapy, David (Patty) Pennycook, and their families; nieces Christine Garrapy, Sherri Page, and their families; along with several cousins and friends.

George was predeceased by his son Geoffrey; his parents Virginia and George; his mother and father in-law, Marjorie and Rollin Bixby; his sisters Annie Widrig and Gloria Garrapy, and his brother Daniel.

The family is grateful for several visiting nurses for their kind and expert care over the last several months, particularly nurses Julie, Sheila, Jessica, Michele, Rachel, Stephanie, and Crystal. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to UVM Home Health and Hospice, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT, 05446, or give online at www.uvmhomehealth.org/give.

At George’s request a public service will not be held. He asked that his family scatter his ashes at memorable places around the country.
