Obituary for Donald J. Dygert

Donald J. Dygert, 97, passed away on October 27, 2022 at his home in Essex. Mr. Dygert was born on January 19, 1925, in Fort Plain, New York son of the late Rexford and Mary (Quackenbush) Dygert. A high school graduate, he attended Krissler Business Institute and Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. He also attended Plymouth State College in Plymouth, NH. In 1983 he became a licensed Real Estate salesperson in the State of New Hampshire.

A Navy combat Veteran of WWII, he served with the Naval Amphibious Force in Campaigns for the Solomon Islands, Bismarck Archipelago, Aitape-Hollandia in New Guinea, also Saipan and the reconquest of Guam in the Mariana Islands. During the Korean Conflict he was assigned to the personal staff of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur.
After his military service he joined the production control staff of Western Printing and Publishing Company in Poughkeepsie, NY as an administrator and scheduler for ten years. Following this Donald was employed by Lockheed-Sanders in Nashua, NH as an electronics buyer until his retirement. After retirement he worked for the White Mt. Shopper in Lincoln, NH and later at the Littleton Courier in Littleton, NH. In 2005 he moved to Vermont and became a resident manager at Heinsberg Senior Housing in Burlington. He moved to Town Meadows Senior Housing in Essex in 2009.

Past memberships include the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Poughkeepsie, NY; The Littleton Lions Club, Littleton, NH; Life membership The VFW and a congregant of St. Mark R.C. Church in Burlington and St. Pius Church in Essex.
He was a recipient of the Navy Combat Actions Award Ribbon, Asiatic/Pacific Medal with Bronze Star, China Service Medal, Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal. A commendation from General of Army Douglas MacArthur and The Navy Corp Conduct Medal.

Donald was predeceased within hours by his sister, Barbara A. Slattery. He is survived by his niece Patricia Slattery Hayes of South Burlington, his niece Erin Slattery, and her wife Nancy Sykes-Slattery of Essex, 6 grand nieces and nephews – Graham Hayes and his partner Andrea Scott, Colleen Shields and her husband Brian Shields, Andrea Hossley and her fiancé William Siple, James Slattery and his wife Priyanka Slattery, Benjamin Slattery, and Spencer Slattery, 3 great grandniece and grandnephews – Makayla Hossley, Slade Hossley, and Finnegan Shields.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Vianney church in South Burlington for Donald and his sister Barbara on Thursday November 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Timothy Naples officiating. Inurnment will be held on Monday November 7, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Vermont Veterans Cemetery, Randolph where full Military Honors will be accorded this WWII veteran.
