Obituary for Barbara Ann (Dygert) Slattery

Barbara Ann (Dygert) Slattery, RN, 96, of South Burlington passed away on October 26, 2022 in South Burlington, VT. She was born in Fort Plain, NY on May 11, 1926, daughter of the late Mary (Quakenbush) Palkovic and Rexford Dygert. Barbara graduated from Amsterdam Memorial Hospital in 1947. She was a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and a former member of the Delta Gamma Delta sorority. She studied pediatric nursing at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. She worked at Vassar Hospital in Poughkeepsie NY in the prenatal nursery and in obstetrics. She married Robert F. Slattery in 1948. Her husband’s military career led them to live in several states in the U.S. as well as living in France where they had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Europe. When her husband retired from the Army they moved to Nashua, New Hampshire in 1964.

She enjoyed doing volunteer work for the Girl Scouts, as a Sunday school teacher and in the military thrift shop. Throughout her life, Barbara was a kind, caring, devoted mother and wife. She had great empathy for those less fortunate than herself and always made efforts to help others. She was a generous donor to numerous organizations to help those in need. Barbara was also a deeply spiritual person and exemplified the values of her Christian faith. She loved reading the Bible and spent many hours in daily prayer.

She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Lt. Col. Robert F. Slattery in 1983 and by her son, Robert Slattery, Jr. in 1998. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Slattery Hayes of South Burlington, her daughter Erin Slattery and her wife Nancy Sykes-Slattery of Essex, her brother Donald Dygert of Essex who passed within six hours of her passing, 6 grandchildren – Graham Hayes and his partner Andrea Scott, Colleen Shields and her husband Brian Shields, Andrea Hossley and her fiancé William Siple, James Slattery and his wife Priyanka Slattery, Benjamin Slattery, and Spencer Slattery, 3 great grandchildren – Makayla Hossley, Slade Hossley, and Finnegan Shields.

The family would like to express our forever gratitude for the loving care and compassion provided by the staff at Gazebo Senior Living and UVM VNA Home Health & Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Vianney church in South Burlington for Barbara and her brother Donald on Thursday November 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Timothy Naples officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Edgewood Cemetery in Nashua, NH on Friday November 4, 2022.
