Obituary for Earlene Mary (Bailey) Williams

Earlene Mary (Bailey) Williams passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. She was born on December 12, 1929 in Burlington, Vermont, attended Essex Junction schools and then graduated from Essex High School (which is now Thomas Fleming School) in 1946.

She married Sherman Earl Williams on August 13, 1949. Together they had eight children. Margo Williams, Karen Cushing (Carl), Brenda Borowski (Jeff), Mark Williams, Amy Marrier (Peter), Elizabeth Williams, Matthew Williams (Jen), Mary Engisch (Peter).

She is survived by Sherman, her husband of 72 years, her sister Helen Bailey, all her children, her 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren

She was predeceased by her parents Marie and Earl Bailey and her beloved grandson Michael Stoddard.
Earlene loved children and over the years, Nana was often the go-to babysitter for her grandchildren. In the late 1960s, she also cared for four foster children.

We asked Dad for one word to describe her, and he answered, “Super!”

Earlene (Mom/Nana) loved holidays and large gatherings when she could feed her big family.
Over the decades, she enjoyed square-dancing, seeing plays and musical theater with her friends and loved music of all kinds - from Bobby Darin and Patsy Cline to Rod Stewart and The Marshall Tucker Band.
She also loved to have a good working squirt gun close by to use on pesky squirrels and to keep grandchildren in line.
The family would especially like to thank our ninth honorary sibling, Haley from Hospice and the nurses, doctors and staff on Miller 5 at UVM Medical Center. Thanks for letting our huge group of family members take over your lounge so we could have a few extra days with Mom/Nana.

A small, private family service will be held at A.W. Rich Funeral home at a later date.
Earlene always wanted a traditional Irish wake after her passing and her family will also gather to raise a glass and celebrate her life at a later date.
