Genevieve Gilroy (Walach), 90, a long time resident of Essex Jct. passed away on April 11th with family by her side. Gen was born on October 24, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island to Edward and Josephine Walach.

Gen grew up in Rhode Island with her sister and best friend Helen (Nowak). Gen was a trail blazer as one of the first women to graduate from the University of Rhode Island as a Pharmacist. Gen later received her MBA from St Michaels college. It was in Rhode Island that Genevieve fell in love with her husband Charlie. They were married in Rhode Island and their three children, Susan, Chuck and Kathy were born there.

In 1967 the family moved to Essex Junction where Charlie was employed as an accountant by IBM and Gen started her 40 year career at Mary Fletcher Hospital. (UVMC)

In the early 1970s Gen worked with Dr. Larry Weed on the PROMIS lab project. This was one of the first drug interaction software programs being developed at the time. Her articles on PROMIS lab were later published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Gen served on the faculty of the University of Vermont as a Pharmacy instructor. Her passion was working with young resident pharmacists. Gen created strong friendships with her residents. Many of her residents kept in touch even after 40 years.

In her spare time Gen enjoyed gardening and was a lover of all music. She was an accomplished pianist often playing at church. During her retirement Gen enjoyed time with the RedHats, being a Hospice volunteer, a Eucharistic minister and spoiling her grandchildren. Gen often had grandchildren spend the summers with her. “My grandchildren keep me young,” she would say.

Genevieve is survived by her children and their families: Susan Billington of Cape Coral Florida and her husband Keith and her children Matthew, Nicholas, and Andrea. Chuck Gilroy of Richmond and his wife Delina and children Charlie and Ashley. Kathy Gilroy and her partner John Rhodes of Moblery, MO and her children Abbigayle, Parker, and Zophia McDougal.
