Obituary for Winona “Nonie” Sherry

Colchester - Winona “Nonie” Sherry passed away at the age of 91 on the evening of January 18th. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on May 13, 1930 to the late Alek Yoksas and Cecile “Muzzy” Trembley Yorksas. She was very proud to be of French (mother’s side) and Lithuanian (father’s side) descent. She lived with her family in Massachusetts until the age of 6, at which point the family then moved to Brunswick, Maine where they lived for several years. Soon after their move to Maine, her father and mother opened a restaurant where Winona later worked as a waitress in her teens. It was at that restaurant where she met her future husband Anthony “Tony” Sherry, a WWII navy officer. Tony and Nonie were married and together for 62 years, and together they raised their only child, York Sherry. In 1975, her family moved to Essex Junction, Vermont, and soon after settled in Colchester.

What Nonie loved most was taking care of and entertaining her family and friends. Also a lover of sunshine, one of her favorite pastimes was tending to her peonies and roses and watching the hummingbirds visit her garden in the summer. She enjoyed the simplicities of life too, like drinking her cup of coffee every morning while doing the daily crossword puzzle and listening to AM 1230 WJOY, which played the Big Band Era and her favorite, Frank Sinatra.

Winona is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Anthony Sherry in 2006, her mother and father, and her sister Dorothy and husband Marcel.
She leaves behind her son York and his wife Rhonda, her grandchildren Sierra and partner Niko, Alicia, and Savanah. She also leaves behind her brother Richard and wife Louise Yorkshus, her niece Debbie and husband Paul Mailot and their family, and niece Cassie and her family.

No visiting hours will take place at this time.
