Dr. Sheilah Maureen O’Flynn Brennan, residing in Essex, Vermont, passed away on February 11th, 2021 at Mansfield Place. She was 91 years old. Dr. Brennan was born February 26, 1929 in St. Johns, Newfoundland, the daughter of David Arthur and Gertrude Cullian O’Flynn.

She earned her Bachelor’s, Licentiate, and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Laval University in Quebec, Canada, all summa cum laude. After receiving her doctorate in 1954, Dr. Brennan did post-doctoral research in England under a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in 1955 at Oxford University.

Dr. Brennan then moved to South Bend, Indiana, where she joined St. Mary’s College in 1955 as an assistant Professor of Philosophy. In 1959 she became the Department Chairperson. In 1971 she joined the University of Notre Dame and received tenure in 1978. She was the first female faculty member to join the Philosophy department at Notre Dame.

She specialized in the early Greek and Existentialist Philosophers including Aristotle, Plato, Whitehead, Sartre, and Kierkegaard. Dr. Brennan published many articles in her field and was given the Sheedy Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1982. She also served on the Notre Dame Board to screen prospective Rhodes and Marshall Scholars.

On December 21, 1960, in Sacred Heart Parish at the University of Notre Dame, she married Dr. Joseph X. Brennan, who passed away October 25, 2010. Together, Sheilah and Joseph were devoted parents to their two sons. They were lovers of the arts and Sheilah particularly favored the artist El Greco and composer Vaughn Williams. Together, they were avid gardeners, maintaining extensive and glorious flower gardens that surrounded their white Cape Cod house.

Dr. Brennan is survived by two sons, Dr. Ciaran J. Brennan (Kathryn) of Essex, VT and Keven J. Brennan (Robin) of Burbank, CA; five grandsons: Ian, Nathaniel, Jeremy, Riley, and Flynn. She was preceded in death by her two elder sisters, Gertrude and Ann.

I am sorry to be coming to this late, but I still wanted to express my condolences to the family and friends of Sheilah Brennan. She was one of my professors when I did my philosophy graduate studies at Notre Dame in the 1980s. She was both a fine professor and a fine person. I still remember things she taught me about Aristotle as well as her gracious hospitality when she hosted our class in her home. She made the department into a more humane and cultured place.

My sincere condolences are extended to the family of Dr. Sheilah Brennan. I am a hospice volunteer and in that role was privileged to meet Sheilah. She was a regular lunch time table-mate and friend of one of my hospice clients at Mansfield Place. To my regret, I did not know Sheilah prior to this time but I could tell from our first meeting there was something very special about her. Almost immediately, when I casually mentioned my husband and I had traveled for a month around Newfoundland and had brought in some pretty photos to share, Sheilah told me that was her birthplace. In fact, I passed along to her a beautiful photo of an iceberg floating by a small Newfoundland village. This photo brought a smile of recollection of happy days in St. John to her kind eyes. I will treasure always the hours spent sitting with Sheilah and my client perusing beautiful photo books, delighting at animal picture books of all types and of coloring, as well as sharing many smiles together over lunch conversation.
