Obituary

Our wonderful Mother, Mom, Nana, Great-Nana, Sister, Aunt and Friend went to heaven on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020 with her beloved daughter Susan and son in law Mike present.

Constance Ann O’Brien was born in Burlington to Cyril and Adelaide (Minall) O’Brien on March 24, 1927.
She grew up in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School in 1944. Throughout school she excelled playing the French horn in the band and orchestra. She loved to dance and was voted best dancer in the class of 1944.

In 1947 she married Vincent Dattilio which resulted in the loves of her life which were her seven children.

Music was an important part of her life that she instilled into her children. She was a member of the Piano Teachers Guild and taught many Burlington children to play the piano. One of her proud accomplishments was playing French horn with the Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra accompanying her father to many locations around Vermont including on the steamboat Ticonderoga.

Connie had a long and rewarding career at Western Union where she started out at the bottom delivering singing telegrams and worked her way up to office manager in Burlington, VT and Worcester, MA.

A kind heart, fun, amazing sense of humor and giving to others were a few of her numerous attributes. She touched so many lives in a positive way and always made you smile and laugh.

Connie loved to paint and stencil objects many of which she displayed at her home and eventually passed on to her friends and children. She loved to coordinate fun activities when she lived at Whitcomb Woods especially being the Bingo caller. She was a friend to all at Cathedral Square Assisted Living where she called home for the last few years.

Her greatest joy was her family. She would light up when one of her children would arrive and ask “Any new news to share with me?” Then you would smell the spaghetti sauce she had been simmering on the stove or her dozens of delicious secret recipe Christmas cookies she had been working on for hours.

She had fun playing card games with her grandchildren. A large amount of time was spent playing word searches or challenging her children to a word find.

Left to treasure and cherish her memory are her children who she adored:
Frank and Mary Dattilio, Vincent and Sally Dattilio, Susan and Mike Thweatt, Mark and Tammy Dattilio, John and Janet Dattilio and Bonnie Dattilio. Grandchildren: MaryEllen, Abbey, Jayson, Andy, Caryn, Cassandra, Matt, Stacey, Jeremy, Amber, Megan, Vincent, Aubrey, Sarah, Colby, Lindsay, Laura, Garrett, 13 great-grandchildren and her sister Lois Long.

She was predeceased by her parents, daughter Deborah Dattilio, grandson Taylor Dattilio, her brother Donald O’Brien and sister Helen Martello.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Dennis Beatty, Cathedral Square Assisted Living and Bayada Home Health Care for providing a safe and healthy environment for Connie during the last few years.

Funeral arrangements provided by A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Essex Junction, VT with a private service and interment at Resurrection Park, S. Burlington, VT.

On behalf of all the residents and staff at Cathedral Square Assisted Living, we would like to send our condolences to the Dattilio family. Connie will be remembered for her smile, quick wit and her sense of humor. She was liked by everyone. Always so friendly, she would often stay in the dining room after a meal to socialize with others. She loved to be around people and easily developed lasting friendships with both residents and staff. May all your wonderful memories of Connie give you comfort and strength. We will miss her.

Dear Susan, I am so sorry you lost your Mom. I have many happy memories of playing at your house. I remember how special your Mom made your 5th (or maybe 6th?) birthday, thrilling us all by taking us to a hair salon to get our hair curled and then out to eat at Boves. She went all out for all of you, you are so lucky to have had such a wonderful Mom. My sincerest condolences to you and your family, Debbie Palmer
