Obituary for Arthur Joseph Merchant

Arthur Joseph Merchant, 85 of South Burlington passed away on December 20, 2020 at Gazebo Senior Living. He was born in Burlington on December 4, 1935 to Alfred and Gladys (Abair) Merchand.

Arthur graduated from Burlington High School in 1955. He was an active member of the Class Reunion Committee to which he took great pleasure in helping to plan and attend many reunion gatherings. He met his future bride, Virginia Bushey when they worked together at the Burlington Daily News; they were married on September 10, 1955. They were married for 53 years until Virginia's passing in August, 2009. Arthur had an uncanny memory for faces and names. Anywhere he traveled, it was rare that he did not see a familiar face to talk with, even thousands of miles from home. Arthur worked as a route salesman for the Burlington Daily News, Table Talk Pies, Fassetts Bakery, Koffee Kup Bakery, Ben's Sandwiches and Green Mountain Florist Supply. He was a long-standing member of the Burlington Elks Club 916 and St. John Vianney Church.

Arthur is survived by his loving children Deborah Morin of Williston, Brenda Roberts of Valrico, FL, David & Deborah Merchant of Colchester, and Lynn & Kenny Johnson of Swainsboro, GA; grandchildren, Scott, Adam and Kyle Morin, Max and Sam Roberts, Jared & Heather Merchant, and Karly Merchant & Jack Hamm; great grandchildren, Drake Morin, Ava and Aiden Merchant; sisters in-law Janet Johnson and Rosalyn & Ivan Smith. He also leaves many wonderful and close friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be greatly missed by all.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Doris Pepin and Shirley Speranza.
