Obituary

Arthur Joseph Merchant, 85 of South Burlington passed away on December 20, 2020 at Gazebo Senior Living. He was born in Burlington on December 4, 1935 to Alfred and Gladys (Abair) Merchand.

Arthur graduated from Burlington High School in 1955. He was an active member of the Class Reunion Committee to which he took great pleasure in helping to plan and attend many reunion gatherings. He met his future bride, Virginia Bushey when they worked together at the Burlington Daily News; they were married on September 10, 1955. They were married for 53 years until Virginia's passing in August, 2009. Arthur had an uncanny memory for faces and names. Anywhere he traveled, it was rare that he did not see a familiar face to talk with, even thousands of miles from home. Arthur worked as a route salesman for the Burlington Daily News, Table Talk Pies, Fassetts Bakery, Koffee Kup Bakery, Ben's Sandwiches and Green Mountain Florist Supply. He was a long-standing member of the Burlington Elks Club 916 and St. John Vianney Church.

Arthur is survived by his loving children Deborah Morin of Williston, Brenda Roberts of Valrico, FL, David & Deborah Merchant of Colchester, and Lynn & Kenny Johnson of Swainsboro, GA; grandchildren, Scott, Adam and Kyle Morin, Max and Sam Roberts, Jared & Heather Merchant, and Karly Merchant & Jack Hamm; great grandchildren, Drake Morin, Ava and Aiden Merchant; sisters in-law Janet Johnson and Rosalyn & Ivan Smith. He also leaves many wonderful and close friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be greatly missed by all.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Doris Pepin and Shirley Speranza.

Heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jennifer Gilwee, for years of caring, compassion and support. Arthur’s family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and caretakers over the last months: UVM Medical Center, Burlington Health and Rehab, UVM Home Health & Hospice Care and Gazebo Senior Living.

A private family burial will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of A. W. Rich Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Arthur’s memory may be made to UVM Health & Hospice

Our family was saddened to hear the news of "Art" death. He delivered bread to our store in the '70s and was always one of the best to deal with. He was dependable, honest and just an all around great guy. We are sorry for you loss.....

I worked at the South Burlington Clerk's office for 40 yrs and Ginny & Art were two of my favorite people to visit and chat with. Ginny worked at the polls for the City with voting for years and was always a person I could count on to help out and do the job very well. When Ginny passed, I could see Art was grieving and I always tried to cheer him up as best I could but he really missed her. Now you are with her again, Art. Rest in peace, both of you. Such wonderful people to visit with and I will always remember them. Laura Kimball

I repeat what the notice says…that Art was an active member of the BHS ’55 Class Reunion Committee. That he was! As Class President, I recall how many years ago he convinced me to put him on the Reunion Committee, and I did. He proved to be very enthusiastic, willing and reliable. He attended most if not all of the committee meetings over the years and had lots to offer. He made many phone calls and did lots of work with the arranging of events for the various reunions. It is most fitting that the last meeting the Committee had was at his home in South Burlington on June 11, 2020 as we had to decide whether to have the 65th Reunion or not. He had previously volunteered his backyard and screened in porch for our Friday night get-together for the three day weekend of the reunion. I enjoyed working with him very much. He was a very kind person and will be missed. Art Stultz, President, Burlington High School Class of 1955.
