Obituary for Joseph Penrose Harry
Joseph was born August 29, 1925 in Winchester, Virginia. He is the son of Francis Penrose Harry and Annie Belle Green Harry. He was raised in Winchester the youngest of five children, having four older sisters. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943 during World War II. He became a pilot attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his time at the University he met Anne Marie Malick and they were married on August 19, 1950 in Canton, Ohio. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary and his 95th birthday just a few weeks prior to his passing.
After holding several engineering positions in the Cincinnati area, he moved the family to Connecticut in 1962 where he worked as a design engineer for Hamilton Standard Division of United Technologies for 25 years, retiring in 1987. He designed propeller gear boxes and components for jet engines. One of the highlights of his professional years was receipt of a patent for technology advances used in early wind turbines.
Anne and Joe had two sons, Donald Joseph, born on in 1953 and John Douglas, born in, 1956. They resided in Suffield, Connecticut for 50 years, before moving to Shelburne, Vermont near their oldest son and his family. In addition to his wife and sons, Joe leaves his beloved grandson, Douglas Harry, currently residing in Massachusetts with his family.
Joe enjoyed being involved with the Church, holding many leadership roles over the years, including Superintendent of the Church School, President of the Church, Treasurer and a Life Deacon in 1993. He enjoyed golfing and a good game of Bridge. He and Anne have enjoyed travelling over the years to California, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Bermuda and the Canadian Rockies.
The family wishes to thank Joe’s many friends and colleagues that have enriched his life and supported him through the years. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Essex Junction, Vermont at 1 pm on September 21, 2020.
