Obituary for Virginia Mary Carlin (O'Brien)

Virginia Mary (O’Brien) Carlin passed away on Saturday July 18th, 2020 at her home, in Essex Junction, VT , with her loving family by her side. Virginia was born February, 13, 1932 in Boston MA to the late Margaret (Sullivan) O’Brien and Walter J. O’Brien. Gini was predeceased by her son Daniel D Carlin, who was the oldest of her five children. She is survived by her children Dennis D Carlin and his wife Eithne Broderick of W Barnstable Mass, Donna D McGame of Mass, Deborah Carlin and her husband Neil MacGillivray of Essex Junction, VT and Douglas D Carlin and wife Jennifer Bacchiochi of Essex Junction VT. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, whom she was known to as meme, Candace (Carlin) Copher, who shared a birthday with her grandmother, John Carlin, Lillian MacGillivray, Hayley Carlin, Noah MacGillivray, Cameron Carlin, Avery, Catherine, Oliver, Ausha, Maya and Taya MacGillivray. She was predeceased by two grandsons Dennis D Carlin JR , known as DJ, and Keegan Carlin MacGillivray.

Mom grew up in West Roxbury with her grandmother and several aunts and uncles. Amongst them was Aunt Lillian, known to Virginia as “mummy”. Aunt Lillian raised Virginia and lived on the Cape with her and her family.

Virginia and James E Carlin of Maine met and were married on September 29th 1953. After living in Maine and then Boston, Virginia moved to Hyannis Ma, where she raised her five children on her own. She worked several jobs waitressing to provide for her family. She was a strong and proud woman and a single mom in a time when it was not easy to be a single mom. In 1982 Virginia began working at the Court house in Barnstable Ma. She continued there until her retirement in 1992. Meme loved the beautiful beaches of Cape Cod, enjoyed her friends from her swimming class, enjoyed movies and shopping and of course her family.

In 2006 Virginia moved to Vermont to live with her daughter Deb and her family. She continued to be an independent woman. She enjoyed her time in Vermont and became an integral part of the MacGillivray family, sharing in many family dinners with the Carlin family down the street, and celebrations big and small. She loved Vermont but always missed her visits from her son Dennis and the beaches of the Cape. She will be deeply missed, always remembered and her spirit will live on in her children and grandchildren. Rest Easy, Mother Dear, Ma, Mum, Mom, and Meme.

There will be a celebration of life on Wednesday August 5th 2020 from 4pm to 8 pm at DJ’s in Hyannis, MA. Social distancing rules must be adhered to. Please visit awrfh.com to share your memories and condolences.
