Obituary for Erlinda Melgarejo (Acosta)

BARRE TOWN, VT

Erlinda Acosta Melgarejo, 75, passed away peacefully after a short battle with a rare fatal brain disorder called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) on May 16, 2020 with her daughter and son-in-law by her side at her home in Barre Town, Vermont.


She was born in Manila, Philippines to Teodoro and Banaag Acosta on April 26, 1945. Erlinda graduated from Arellano High School in Manila, Philippines. She married Oscar Bascon Melgarejo on February 5, 1963. A devoted wife, mother and business woman she raised 4 children of her own, Antonette, Anthony, Allan and Apple Ann and several grandchildren. She grew up and resided in her native country of the Philippines until migrating to the U.S. in 2009. She loved cooking, entertaining, shopping, socializing with friends & family and travelling including visiting several of the different States in the U.S. and Canada. Her dream vacation came true in 2018 when she went on a European adventure with her sisters to Germany, Paris France to see the Eiffel Tower and Belgium. She spent her life as a good friend and “Mommy” to many, a devoted Catholic, a good neighbor but most of all a good mom, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved hosting the Annual Christmas party and enjoyed laughing with family and friends.

Erlinda is survived by a son, Allan A. Melgarejo (Philippines), a daughter, Apple Ann Melgarejo Lane, son-in-law Justin D. Lane, grandsons Brett and Wyatt Lane of Barre Town, VT, sisters, Leticia Torno, Marilou Navarro, Emelita Rabiak, Yolanda Sapida, brother, Jerry Acosta and many brothers and sisters-in-law. Grandchildren, Kaila (Dave), Lovely (Ryan), Kim (Art), Gladys (Cris), Genica (Ellijah), Kyle, Mae, Keneth (Mac), Klay, Kate (Justine), Angelo, Jolina and great grandchildren Kacee, Dhraey, Kimi, Kairi, Ayomide, Elle, Hunter, Stellar, Kali and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Oscar B. Melgarejo, parents Teodoro & Banaag Acosta, son Anthony Melgarejo, daughter Antonette Melgarejo, brother Teodoro Acosta Jr, sisters Felisa Reyes, Belina Susulin, Adoracion Tan, Lilia Acosta and grandson Alvin Melgarejo.

Special thanks to Father Julian Asucan of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church for spiritual support. The family would like to give thanks to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice especially to hospice nurse Casey Leclerc, caregiver Bonnie Abare and social worker Amanda Shiverick who provided incredible and compassionate care and support for Erlinda and her family during her last days. Also, close family friends Flor Bilodeau and Divina Haverick for emotional support and tireless help in our time of need.
