Obituary for James Philip Terry Jr.

James Philip Terry, Jr., 93, of Shelburne, VT (formerly Cumberland, RI and Wasilla, AK) passed away peacefully on March 26, 2020 after a brief stay in The Eagle Room at The Vermont Respite House.

Jim was born on May, 23, 1926 in Assonet, MA to the late Gladys Grinnell Terry and James P. Terry Sr. A veteran of World War II, he served in the US Navy, stationed in Carmel, CA. He graduated from Northeastern University with an Engineering Degree and worked for the Valley Gas Company for over 30 years, where he was highly respected and retired as Vice President. During his career, he was an active member of The New England Gas Association and The Guild of Gas Managers.

Jim was a life long member and actively involved at the Arnold Mills United Methodist Church and past President of the Cumberland-Lincoln Rotary Club. He served as Boy Scout Leader for Arnold Mills Troop 1 and was a long time member of the Arnold Mills Community-ites, Rhode Island Pilots Association and Rhode Island Ducks Unlimited.

Jim is survived by a son Scott Terry of Colchester, VT, a daughter Betsy Terry of Colchester, VT, a daughter Jody Cavanaugh and son-in-law Tony Mastrobattista of Lebanon, PA, and a granddaughter Hanna Orselet of Arlington, VA. Jim is predeceased by his beloved wife Sally Harlow Terry.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, watching the Red Sox and music. He loved the outdoors and went with family and friends on several canoe trips to Maine including the Allagash and St. John Rivers. Before retiring he and Sally spent several weeks during 2 summers volunteering with the National Forest Service on Admiralty Island in Alaska. After retiring, Jim spent 25 summers adventuring throughout Alaska with Sally, flying places in their Piper Cub, hiking, fishing and RV’ing. His love of music never diminished. He was able to play by ear and fortunately was still playing the harmonica and even taking piano lessons just a week before he passed.

Jim was loved by all, and will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined at The Arnold Mills United Methodist Church, 690 Nate Whipple Highway, Cumberland, RI.
