Obituary for Mary Jane DePaul (Marrier)

Mary Jane (Marrier) DePaul, 75, of Burlington, VT passed away on March 4, 2020 surrounded by her boys and siblings. She was born in Burlington on July 26, 1944 to Leo and Mary Marrier the first of 8 children. She was raised in a loving home which guided her to choose the paths she walked in life. She married John Michael DePaul on December 2, 1963 and they enjoyed their three sons: Stephen John DePaul (married to Rose Marie DePaul of Colchester, VT) Dennis Patrick DePaul (married to Daryl DePaul of Jericho, VT and their son Dylan DePaul); and Jason Lee DePaul (married to Mary Merchant DePaul of Waynesboro, VA). John and Jane raised their three bundles of joy in their home, which was over 100 years old, in Winooski. This was called home for 25 years

Soon after her divorce at the age of 42 she began to search the scriptures and was baptized on November 11, 1989 in a symbol of her dedication to serve Jehovah God. She was a longtime member of the North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses located in Colchester, VT. Once her children moved on to start their own families her strong faith and commitment to serving her creator became a central aim in her life. She enjoyed her time with the congregation and sharing her faith with neighbors and friends. She looked forward to Monday afternoon’s working with Mary Trombly and many other friends from her congregation in the Bible education work.

Her first job was to care for her children, but she was also employed by Grandway, the phone company, and Boy Scouts of America’s head office in Waterbury. Her favorite job was as the principal’s secretary at Winooski High School where she built close and deep friendships with both staff and students of the district. She eventually retired after 23 years and continued many of those friendships through her retirement.

She also was known as “MOM” to many of her sons’ friends as they grew up. She made her home a place for them to gather and grow. Most of them recently had a chance to stop in and see her while she was at the McClure Miller Respite House in Colchester, VT. Each of them brought a joyful smile to her face and they reminisced about times past with laughter and joy. The team of the Respite House made sure she was comfortable and well cared for which offered her family and friends comfort.

Her first love was for her children, but high on her list was her love for the history of the Royal families of Britain, mysteries, the Victorian and Egyptian eras. She loved to read and could devour a lengthy book in a day. She collected every Agatha Christie book available and her extensive Nancy Drew collection stems back to childhood. Her mother use to say when Jane was growing up “if you’re looking for Jane, she’s in her room with her nose in a book!”

After the death of her mother, she moved into Fern Hill senior apartments where she met and made new friends. She would often be seen out shopping or having lunch with her three sisters in faith, Joyce, Fran and Yvette. They also attended their weekly meetings together at the Kingdom Hall.

She is survived by her children and her 7 siblings: Leo (Butch) Marrier, Michael Marrier, Barbara Jarrett, David Marrier, Peter Marrier, Joseph Marrier and Alan Marrier and their spouses, children, mates and grand & great grandchildren.

Services were delayed due to Covid-19 but now will be held VIA Zoom on Saturday 9/19/20 at 3:30 PM EDT. Please Contact a family member for login info.

In lieu of flowers, Jane wished for contributions to be made to Jehovah’s Witnesses, which can be accomplished through JW.org. or through the local congregation.
