Fairfax, VT – Our beloved wife and mother, Ruth Agnes McCauley Stuart, age 81, passed away on March 12, 2020, at Maple Ridge Memory Care. She was predeceased by her parents Lee and Alice McCauley, and her sister Mary Alice Kranz. Ruth was born in So. Kingstown, RI on February 20, 1939. Her family moved to Sellersburg, IN where she graduated high school, 3rd in her class, in 1957. She attended Purdue University where she met the love of her life, Doug Stuart. They were married on August 13, 1960. She graduated from Columbia Hospital in Milwaukee with a Medical Technologies Certificate in August 1961. The family lived in Wisconsin for 8 years and then moved to Middlebury, Vermont in 1968 to enjoy the skiing and boating that Vermont has to offer. Over the next 20 years, Ruth (and Doug) raised three very busy kids. The family spent endless weekends skiing at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl and boating on Lake Champlain at their summer cottage in South Hero. During this busy time, Ruth decided to return to college and graduated from Johnson State College in 1981 with a BA in Accounting. She then worked seventeen years at the Counseling Service of Addison County until she retired in 1997. Ruth and Doug moved to West Addison, VT in 1992 to again enjoy Lake Champlain and then Fairfax, VT in 2002 to be closer to family. Ruth became an active member of the Lions Club of Georgia, VT in 2004 and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow in 2011. Ruth was a very talented seamstress, enjoyed gardening, spending time with her many friends, and traveling in the RV. Survivors include her husband, Doug; son, James (Mary Jo) of Marquette, MI; son, Michael (Melissa) of Essex Jct., VT; and daughter, Holly (Christopher) of Georgia, VT. She also adored her three grandchildren, Alden, Charlotte, and Quinn. The family would like to send a special thanks to the staff and caregivers at Maple Ridge Memory Care for their loving care and support for Ruth (“Ruthie” “Ru Ru”) over the last two years. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association. A celebration of her life will be held in June.
