Obituary

Fairfax - Joyce (McDaniel) Stewart, 88, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at St. Albans Health and Rehab center in St. Albans. She was born on January 23rd, 1931 in Gold Bar, Washington. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret (Mace) McDaniel.

Joyce was an avid gardener, she was very proud of her wildflowers, lilac bushes, and her annual vegetable garden. She loved to cook, she would endlessly search magazines for the latest and best recipes to try for her family. Her greatest pride was her family and her beloved husband.

Joyce was always a private person, she never cared for crowds or social events. She was truly adored by those who knew her. She was a loving wife to her husband, a wonderful mother to her four children, a special grandmother, great grandmother and even a great-great grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

Joyce is survived by her two sons, Delbert Murdaugh and wife Sonya of Washington, Robert Stewart Jr. of Fairfax, two daughters, Sherry Lynn Harris and husband Randy of Georgia, Barbara Shelly and husband Steven of Georgia, grandchildren, Andrew, Randy, Kimberly, and Stephanie Harris, Kamerin Lynn Bazemor, Brandon Robert Shelly, and Paul Ray Murdaugh, great grandchildren, Charlie and Ty Bazemore, Grace Ann Shelly, Brandon Ellerbee, Alexander Ellerbee, Realyn Hartage, Michael Toledo, Avery Toledo, Logan, Natalie, and Lacy Harris, and Rose Murdaugh.

Joyce was predeceased by her husband Robert Stewart Sr., three brothers, Robert Edward McDaniel, Edward McDaniel, and William McDaniel.

To the family, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the knowledge that soon God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things (will) have passed away.”(Rev. 21:3,4) May this promise give you comfort now and a real hope for the future. My deepest sympathies.

Lol Robert how she loved that spray!! When “garden” sense came out she sprayed longer! At least it smelled better!! I remember one winter we were out tobogganing down the big hill across from the White House!! Snow was falling hard and we convinced her to come out and take a ride.... Well she was on the back and we told her to hold onto the ropes on the side ....We took off mom inadvertently grabbed under the toboggan and then we had a big bump all we could hear was my mom cry out ..,we finish the ride fast ..at the bottom all laughing and rolling except for mom she was there her face went white and she said I have to go inside! And when we were done tobogganing we went inside and their mom was she had broken Her wrist! ! A trip to the ER and Mom was fixed up...never again did she go for a ride! Mom never complained about anything! Always took care of us and gave the best of herself! She sacrificed for us all the time to make sure we had the life she didn’t! You will be missed mom!

The old time photos are of mom's side of our family. She was never forthcoming with information regarding her side of our family. These photos came from her aunt, Bertha. I pieced together much information, her family, like many in the U.S., was a family of immigrants. They raised families and were good, down to earth people. As far as I know, Mom was the last of Margaret Mace's children, but her lineage lives on through their many children and great grandchildren.
My most humorous recollection of mom would be fly spray. She would enter a room with all of us kids and begin to spray to kill one fly, unaware of the danger she was exposing her children to. I look back on these moments and see how much people were unaware of common dangers and problems.
