Obituary for Heather Renaud (Mathewson)

Heather M. Renaud, 74, of Windsor, CT and most recently of Shelburne, VT, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019 after a brief illness with her husband of 50 years by her side. She was born January 8, 1945, to the late Douglas and Ruth Mathewson. Heather lived in Pelham, NY while she was growing up and spent countless summers at Highland Lake in Winsted, CT and at Gaylord Pond in Colebrook, CT, “Brookside” as it is known to her family. It was at these places she spent time with her grandparents, aunts, and cousins and where she learned to boat and sail and compete in sailing races as a part of the Highland Lake Sailing Club. Heather graduated from Jackson College of Tufts University and went on to work at The Travelers in Hartford, CT where she met her future husband, Ronald A. Renaud.

Heather and Ron moved to Windsor in 1969 and made many lasting friendships in their neighborhood and through the Windsor Jaycees. After having her two daughters, Heather worked at First Church Early Learning Center in Windsor where she taught 4 year old nursery school for 25 years. She shared her creativity and her love for reading stories, singing, and curiosity with many Windsor children over the years.

After retiring, Heather was able to spend more time as “Grammie” to her grandchildren, to travel to places of interest, and to work in her flower, vegetable, and herb gardens. She also was an avid sports fan and loved watching and listening to UCONN basketball, the Red Sox, and the Patriots. Heather was an active member of the Windsor community and volunteered her time working on fundraising for the Windsor Library Association and teaching children’s programs for the Windsor Historical Society. Heather enjoyed history, reading, and she always had knitting, sewing, and quilting projects going. She was a member of the Friendship Quilters and frequently made quilts for a variety of charitable causes. Heather was also a member of First Church in Windsor and enjoyed being a member of the First Church Women’s Club.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald A. Renaud, of Shelburne Vermont; her sister and brother-in-law, Mary M. and Richard C. Grusin of Key West, Florida; her cousins, Joseph “Norton” Roth and Anne S. Camp, her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly R. and Brian F. Tivnan of Shelburne, VT; and her daughter and son-in-law, Mary R. and Bradford J. Hastings of Windsor, CT. Heather is also survived by her grandchildren, Brendan F. and Kyle R. Tivnan, and Abigail R. and Thomas G. Hastings.
