Donald Perry Hipes, 85, of Essex Junction,VT, formerly of Jericho, VT, entered into eternal rest at home on October 7, 2019 surrounded by family. He was born September 24, 1934 and raised in Charmco, WV by his parents, Lewis Adair & Margaret Thomson Hipes. Don graduated Rupert High School, WV in 1952 and Ohio State in 1955 with a degree in Agriculture.

He met the love of his life, June Larman of Lynchburg, VA, and they were married on June 30, 1956. Don proudly served in the United States Army in 1957 – 1960 during which time he received special training in Engineering at Ft Belvoir.

After serving in the Army he worked for Royster Fertilizer Company, Knoxville, MD. During his 27-year career with the Soil Conservation Service, USDA, his passion for the proper use of natural resources was well known. Dear June and family, I came to know Don while managing VT Master Gardener, 2000-2012. Don was already a veteran volunteer!
He was a kind mentor to this new employee. I so looked forward to visiting with him at our old Spear St location where we quietly chatted about life and plants. His gentle manner, smile and upbeat advise for every situation helped greatly and now provide wonderful memories. Please know there are so many who will miss Don's dry wit and his smile. I am very sorry for your loss.
Sincerely, Nancy Hulett

Starting in 2015, I had the pleasure & honor of working with & and learning from Don on the Vermont Extension Master Gardener Helpline. He took me under his wing on my first (newbie & anxious) shift and continued to be the reassuring mentor. It was easy to see why the entire team delighted in his vast knowledge, graceful guidance and wry wit. Though I have only known him for the last few years, it's easy to see what a difference he made in his many people he must have helped, supported & counseled. Sending love & support .... and hoping that knowing how much Don was appreciated might offer some comfort.

Don was a wonderful volunteer and such a sweet and wonderful person. I only knew him a short time, but he always had something funny or upbeat to say that put a smile on my face. I feel honored to have known him in his final years, and we are so appreciative of his dedication and service to the UVM Master Gardener program. Seeing the photos you posted of him at the Master Gardener Helpline made me smile and feel honored.:) Sending my best wishes to all Don's family during this difficult time. Please know he was a big part of our team and we miss him so much!!

June, Tony & Family: I am so sad to hear of Don's passing. He was such a kind man and I have truly missed seeing him at the Master Gardener Helpline. It was such a pleasure to support him as a dedicated volunteer over the past 15 years. My thoughts are with you all. Kindly, Lisa Chouinard
