Obituary for William Michael Murphy

Bill Murphy grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and served in the Peace Corps in Chile, where he met the love of his life and soulmate, Lita. After living in Brazil and Oregon, they moved to Colchester, VT in 1979, with their daughters Michelle and Nicole.

Bill taught a wide variety of courses in the school of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Vermont and was also part of the Outreach Program to help Vermont farmers. He retired after 25 years in 2004. He is also the author of Greener Pastures On Your Side Of The Fence.

Bill is survived by his wife Lita, his daughters Michelle Murphy-Ertle and Nicole Murphy, his son-in-law Steve Ertle, and his grandchildren Ciara and Nathan Ertle and Tristin Houston.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 16 from 6-9 pm at the Whitcomb Barn, 199 Jericho Road (Route 15), Essex, VT.

The Murphy family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the UVM Medical Center oncology doctors, nurses and staff who went above and beyond in providing such personal, thoughtful and professional care.
