Obituary for Elmond Decker

Decker, Elmond (Deck) Age 93, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019 in Shelburne, Vermont. He was born on December 3, 1925 to Delania and Esther Decker. He resided in Beavercreek, Ohio, for 61 years where he raised his family with his surviving loving wife, Anita (Hunkeler) Decker, his daughter, Diana, and husband Jim Dunn, and his son, Richard, and wife Lynne. His surviving grandchildren are Celia, Julia, Travis, and Dustin, and his great granddaughter, Raelynn. Deck was passionate about providing for his family and keeping our country safe. In his youth, he worked to support his family. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII, earning the GI Bill to pay for his electrical engineering degree from Oregon State University. He worked for RCA installing radar equipment around the world. Deck met his wife, the former Anita Hunkeler, while she was vacationing in Europe. They were later married in Frankfurt, Germany and lived, learned to ski, and traveled. Deck and his wife moved to Beavercreek, Ohio, in 1957 to continue his 45 year career at WPAFB. He was an active community member during the early years of Beavercreek township as it formed into a city. Deck also had many friends as a member of the Kitty Hawk Ski Club. Upon retiring, Deck created a science kit to teach students around Ohio all about the physics of waves. This kit is still in use today in high schools in the Miami Valley. Deck received numerous awards, including Dayton’s Engineer of the Year, and was inducted into the Dayton Engineering and Science Hall of Fame in 2017 for his groundbreaking work resulting in the redesign of our naval ships directly saving lives. Deck was an avid boater, spending many years navigating the Ohio River as a Coast Guard Auxiliary member. Deck and his wife held season tickets for Wright State University’s Theater for many years, enjoying the musicals immensely. They also belonged to the Beavercreek Senior Center where Deck had many friends. They moved to Vermont to be closer to their daughter’s family and to celebrate the holidays together. Special thanks to The Residences at Shelburne Bay for his care the last seven months. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Foundation Fighting Blindness or to the charity of your choice.
