Obituary for George Kurt Scotton

Print
George Kurt Scottonwas taken from us unexpectedly November 19, 2018, in Grand Isle, Vermont.

George was born May 9, 1951, at Peck Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. He was the oldest child of George Hummel and Annaliese John Scotton. George grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY. In his youth, he enjoyed riding and showing horses. George was a Boy Scout and active in his church, Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church. George ran track in school both in Poughkeepsie and Essex Junction High School upon moving to Vermont. George spent summers water skiing on Lake Champlain and winters skiing in Stowe. He became a member of the ski patrol during high school. George graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1969 and attended the University of Maine at Orono majoring in Civil Engineering. After college, George focused on skiing, moving to Aspen, Colorado, with his best friend Doug Prior. George spent several years in Aspen skiing and working at MesaStore as a baker. While out west, George became an avid kayaker, running the Colorado River many times as well as other exciting white water. George returned to Vermont to welcome his first niece Jenny. Upon returning to Vermont, George enjoyed duck and deer hunting with his father and friends and hiking Smugglers Notch for many years. George held various jobs through the years—chimney sweep, realtor, civil engineer. George ended his working career at IBM. George’s great passion was music—Jazz music to be specific. He left his mark on Burlington over the years as a DJ on the UVM radio station WRUV. George hosted his radio show “Music in the Jazz Tradition” for close to 25 years. George was instrumental in the creation of the Burlington Jazz Festival. His favorite times were traveling to Saratoga, NY, for the annual Jazz Festival held at the SPAC every June and he would follow up this trip with trips to Montreal in early July for the Montreal Jazz Festival and some good food. George loved Vermont. He loved living in Grand Isle by his lake—Lake Champlain. He loved driving the back roads and loved it even more if he had someone to take with him. He loved elk and caribou hunting in Colorado and Canada. He would meet up with his uncles and travel to Colorado to hunt. These trips meant a lot to George. George traveled throughout the United States and planned trips with family when possible, sharing his knowledge and love for the beauty of the land. George loved taking care of the grounds of the Champlain Adult Campgroundwhere he lived for the past 39 years. George spent the last few years tinkering. He created unique whirly gigs which he gifted to people throughout the islands and beyond. George’s one regret was never making the draw for a moose hunting permit.

George was preceded in death by his parents George Hummel Scotton and Annaliese John Scotton as well as his grandparents John and Elizabeth Scotton and Kurt and Anna John. George was also preceded in death by his uncles, who were more like brothers, Frank Scotton and Richard Scotton.

George is survived by his sister Susan (Bruce) Foster of Wake Forest, NC and his sister Liese (Rodney) Rhodus of Richmond, KY. He is also survived by his nieces Jenny (Jason) Sellars, Emily (Tim) Modlin of North Carolina and Celia Rhodus of Kentucky and a nephew Andrew Rhodus of Kentucky, his best friend Doug (Penny) Prior, and several aunts, cousins, and great niece and nephews. George also leaves many close friends and neighbors in Vermont and across the country.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for this summer. His family requests that expressions of love be made to one of the following: The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research: www.michaeljfox.org/foundation The Nature Conservancy in Vermont: Vermont@tnc.org University of Vermont Radio Station WRUV: uvm.edu Or an organization of your choice which you feel will honor George’s life.
