JOHN WOOD,
Age 85, Essex
John Wood, 85, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2016. He was born in St. Albans, on March 8, 1931 to the late Jack Brown Wood and Alice Thayer Wood. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Norton) Wood. The couple would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary in December.
John has resided in Essex for over 40 years but was formerly a resident of Barre. John graduated from Bellows Free Academy where he was president of his class. He attended Norwich University and then transferred to the University of Vermont and graduated in 1954 from the College of Engineering.
John began his engineering career in Effingham Illinois where he worked for the Department of Transportation. After returning to Vermont, he joined the Vermont State Highway Department where he worked for almost 40 years in various departments.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son Jack Wood and his wife Pam of Norton, MA; a daughter Judy Bancroft of Rutland, VT; and a daughter Jennifer Doran of Sunset Beach, NC. John is also survived by a sister Mary Wright of St. Albans, VT; several nieces and nephews, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ann Potter and Jane Baker.
John served on the school board in Barre Vermont for six years. He was an avid golfer and was a club champion at the Barre Country Club as well as Essex Country Club. He had three hole in ones in his golf career. He enjoyed bowling and most recently walking in the mall.
A private interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Essex Junction.
