Obituary for Janet Elizabeth Induni (Austin)

Janet Elizabeth Induni (Austin)
Janet Elizabeth (Austin) Induni, 60, of Essex, passed away on Saturday January 17, 2016 following a long and courageous battle with cancer at Vermont Respite House in Williston. She was born on November 29, 1955 in Verdun, Quebec, daughter of Elizabeth (Graham) Austin and the late Roy Austin. She married Noel Induni on September 6, 1986 in Sutton Junction, PQ, Canada, Janet received Certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto in Piano and Music Theory. She graduated from Marionopolis College in Music Arts. She was an accomplished Classical Piano player. Her background was in classical music but she fit in perfectly as a backup piano player in the group “Dr. Jazz and the Dixie Hotshots”. After moving to Vermont she returned to college and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theory and Canadian Studies from the University of Vermont. Janet had been employed as a Station Manager with Pilgrim Airlines in Montreal and as a Passenger Service Agent for Eastern Airlines. For several years she was the secretary treasurer for the Vermont Genealogy Society. She worked as an Import Specialist US Customs Service before transferring to the position of a security specialist with Homeland Security.

Janet loved sports and always rooted for the New York Giants and after the Expos moved from Montreal, she adopted the New York Yankees. These last few years she enjoyed golfing at “The Links at Lang Farm” in Essex with her husband. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making dress shirts for Noel. A few years after moving to Vermont she adopted a Shetland sheepdog from the Humane Society in Burlington. That simple action was a life changing event for her. Despite never having owned a dog in her life she became an inveterate dog lover and from that time on lived for her Shelties. She was a long time member of the Burlington Obedience Training Club where she also held the position as the Secretary. She had traveled all over New England competing with her Shelties in both agility and obedience. She also had some special trips that took her to Sheltie National Championships in Virginia Beach and New Brunswick, Canada. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her story.

She is survived by her husband Noel Induni of Essex, mother Elizabeth Austin of Beaconsfield Quebec, stepson Kurt Induni of Colorado, stepdaughter Deborah Induni of Louisiana, brother-in-law Peter Murray and wife Michele of Isle La Motte, sister-in-law Lois Whitney of South Burlington, 6 step grandchildren Kate, Melanie, Sarah, Courtney, Brandon, Ben, several nieces, nephews, cousins and her 5 Sheltie “Children” Reser, Banu, Epi, Mitzi and Indigo.

Ten years ago, she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. She survived that and then was hit with leukemia. For the past few years her cancer would rear its ugly head only to have her beat it back again. She made every effort to not give in. She worked out her chemo schedules so she could continue to compete with her Shelties and did remarkably well despite the toll the cancer was taking on her body. She always said that it was the fun of working with the dogs that gave her the drive to continue.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday January 22, 2016 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel with Pastor Joe Moore officiating. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Janet’s memory may be made to the American Shetland Sheepdog Association, (www.assa.org) Care of Al Bianchi, 500 Millstone Road, Chesapeake, VA, 23322-4367.
