Mary E. “Betty” (Hill) Cushing

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Hill) Cushing, 88 passed away at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington on Wednesday October 15, 2008. Betty was born on October 28, 1919 in Chelsea, VT daughter of the late Thomas and Jessie (Davis) Hill. She was a graduate of Chelsea High School class of 1937 and Burlington Business College. She was very proud of her civil service work in Washington, D.C. during WWII. Betty married Ralph W. Cushing on October 22, 1955 in Chelsea, VT. Ralph and Betty made their home in Jeffersonville, VT where they raised their son and daughter until Ralph’s death on July 3, 1978. Betty remained in Jeffersonville until she moved to her daughter’s Colchester home in 2003. She was a member of the Eastern Stars Chapter #65 OES of Johnson, the Jeffersonville Cemetery Association and the Second Congregational Church in Jeffersonville. She enjoyed maintaining her huge vegetable and flower gardens and spent many hours each fall canning and freezing her vegetables. Betty’s baked beans and chicken pie were welcome at many a community supper. Betty loved seeing her grandchildren grow and enjoyed embroidering and quilting, usually with one of her cats nearby.

She is survived by

Her Daughter Catherine Cleary and husband William of Colchester;

Her Sister-in-law Mary Hill of Chelsea;

Her Grandson Matthew Thomas Cleary of Colchester;

Her Granddaughter Rachel Elizabeth Cleary of Colchester;

Several nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by:

Her son William “Bill” Thomas Cushing on May 8, 2005

Her two brothers:

Kenneth Hill;

Wendell Hill;

And her sister-in-law Mildred Hill.

There will be no public visiting hours. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday October 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church, Jeffersonville with the Reverend Peggy Tooker officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Jeffersonville Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Betty’s memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Home Care or Hospice Program 1110 Prim Road Suite # 1
