Obituary for Michael Homer Yans

Michael Homer Yans
Michael H. Yans

Born on April 24, 1919, Michael H. Yans (96) died on December 14, 2015 in Vermont where he spent his last few years, close to his daughter and son-in-law Cindy Yans and Robert Mayer.

“Mikey,” to most who remember him, was a loving, compassionate soul who was ready to meet the entity he called “The Man Upstairs” quite some time before that entity was ready to meet him. A lifelong resident of Mamaroneck, NY, Mike's mailing address remained the same for over 90 years. He was a devoted parishioner and "altar boy emeritus" of Holy Trinity Church, a WWII vet, co-proprietor of “Yans Brothers Wines & Liquors,” a messenger for BNY, a tennis instructor, and a skilled, all-around handyman to the masses.

Predeceased by his six siblings, Frank, Jenny, Marion, Molly, Joe, and Eddie, and survived by his daughter as well as seven nieces and nephews and their families, Mikey’s chapter ended quietly as he lovingly turned the world over to several new generations. Mike’s “real” job, however, was to help anyone who crossed his path with whatever they needed (whether they knew it or not), and to make sure that every element involved was properly nailed, glued, rubber-banded, stapled, or duct-taped in place, covered with plastic, if possible, and helpfully labeled with magic marker. He began many sentences with “When I was in the army…” and ended many with “Whaddya gonna do?"

His generosity, his smile, his harmonica, and his plaid hat will be missed.
