Lorraine (Cutler) O’Brien died suddenly at home with her husband by her side on March 23, 2015. She was born in Montpelier, VT on March 5, 1930 to the late Marcus M. and M. Agnes (Peterson) Cutler. She graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Montpelier in 1948 and went to work at the National Life Insurance Co.
Lorraine married William R. O’Brien in St. Augustine’s Church, Montpelier on December 26, 1950. They moved to Virginia where William was stationed with the VT National Guard 43rd Division during the Korean War. After he was discharged they lived in Waterbury, VT and in 1953 they moved to Essex Jct. In 1965, after her last child started school, Lorraine went to work at UVM in the Accounting Office and in 1980 transferred to ETV, which was a part of UVM at that time. She retired from there in 1991.
Lorraine enjoyed traveling, walking, reading, family gatherings, and spending time at the family camp on Lake Eden. She spent her last morning enjoying her great-grandson Calvin.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William, her five children: William O’Brien. Jr. and his wife Barbra, Michael O’Brien and his wife Lynn, Richard O’Brien and his wife Linda, Patricia Breen and her husband Sean all of Fletcher, VT and Kathryn Morgan and her husband Jim of Essex Jct., VT; nine grandchildren: Carrie O’Brien, Celia O’Brien, Justin O’Brien, Kelly Lucci and husband John, John O’Brien, Joanna Morgan and husband Daniel Bonner, Christine Morgan, Billy Morgan, and Daniel O’Brien, two step-grandchildren: Kyle Crofts and partner Tiffany Reed, and Corey Crofts, two great-grandchildren: Collin Lucci and Calvin Bonner, one step-great-grandchild Kasen Crofts. She also leaves two brothers: James Cutler of Candler, NC and Marcus Cutler and his wife Charlotte of Orlando, FL. Two sisters: Marguerite Orr of Essex, VT and Florence Morse and her husband Elliott of E. Montpelier; two sisters-in-law: Madeline S. Cutler of E. Montpelier, VT and Kathleen Lumbra of Waterbury Ctr., VT, two brothers-in-law: Harry O’Brien and Charles O’Brien and wife Georgia of Waterbury, VT, several nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Kathy Laird O’Brien and granddaughter Kimberly Rose O’Brien. Brothers: Harold Cutler and his wife Blanche, Robert Cutler, Franklin Cutler and his wife Yolunda, Albert Cutler and sisters-in–law Kathryn Cutler, Beverly Cutler, Mary Magee and her husband Robert, Louise O’Brien and brothers-in-law Alden Orr and Joseph Lumbra.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday March 26, 2015 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel, 57 Main Street, Essex Jct., VT 05452. A celebration of life with reception will be held on Friday March 27, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Catamount Country Club, 1400 Mountain View Road, Williston. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Essex Rescue, 1 Educational Drive, Essex Jct., VT 05452 or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, ATTN: Tribute Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
