Obituary for Dorothy Mae Corkins (Riegel)

Dorothy Mae Corkins (Riegel)
Dorothy Mae Corkins (Dot), 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 27 at North Country Hospital in Newport, surrounded by loving family.

Dot was born on July 11, 1929 to Wallace, Sr and Viola (Buchanan) Riegel. She attended schools in Newport before marrying the love of her life, Harold Corkins, Sr on December 6, 1947. Together they moved to Long Island in 1949 where they began to raise their eight children before returning back home to Newport in 1969 and finally settling back into the family home on Clyde Street in 1973 where they both lived out their lives.

Dot loved to play Bingo, complete the crossword puzzles, watch Yankees baseball games, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and play cards especially Skip-bo. She loved all the family pets, especially CJ, Benny and Easy.

One of her great joys was spending time with her 20 grandchildren and 21 great-children and 2 great-great grandchildren. Many of her grandchildren learned to read sitting on Nana’s lap. She was very proud of all of their accomplishments but she was especially proud of her grandson Ryan’s Eagle Scout award.

Dot is survived by her children, Harold (Donna), West Palm Beach, FL; Ronald (Dolly) Newport, VT; Craig (Mary) Derby, VT; Randall, Westfield, VT; Darren, Newport, VT; by her siblings DeeDee (Richard) Morse, Cornish, NH; Shirley Doncaster, Coventry, VT; Bill (Jackie) Riegel, Glover VT and Ft. Myers, FL; Mary Blais, Derby, VT and Nancy Cole, North Troy, VT and by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold R. Corkins, Sr; her sons, Alan and Van, her daughter, Valerie Gibson; her sisters Josephine (Jo) Morrow and Beverley (Betty) Blais; her brother, Wallace Riegel, Jr. and by her grandson, Eli Goss.

A memorial service to celebrate her life and love will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 13 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 44 Second Street Newport, VT. with the Rev. Jane Butterfield officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Marks Episcopal Church, PO Box 125, Newport, VT or Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Shelter, 4473 Barton Orleans Road, Orleans, VT 05860.
