Obituary for Julie Anne Rowe
Julie Anne Rowe, 78, of Metuchen NJ, died on November 8, 2019, in Essex Junction, Vermont, where she had recently moved to be near her sisters in the final stages of a long illness.
Julie was born on April 20, 1941, to Julia Raphel Rowe and Luther Curtis Rowe, in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1951 Julie’s family moved to Metuchen, where she attended St. Francis Elementary School and later St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick.
In 1963 Julie graduated from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, Md. It was there that she became famous for her bridge playing skills, learning from her mentor, Monsignor Klein, president of Mount St. Mary’s College. Playing bridge was Julie’s passion in life, and she eventually earned the prestigious status of “Life Master”. Playing at the highest levels of bridge, Julie met many celebrities, including Omar Sharif and Charles Goren, who for many years was the leading player in the world.
Julie taught at Lincoln Elementary School in Edison for 38 years, work she loved. She often remarked that she would not smile for the first half of the school year so the children wouldn’t take advantage of her. Those who knew of Julie’s generous spirit, warm heart, and love of children always found that very hard to believe.
Julie had many lifelong friends and could be seen on a weekly basis at her beloved Du-chess Diner with Sheila (Cotton) Tynday, telling stories and keeping up with her life. Her home was always open for family and friends to stop by or, if traveling through, to spend the night.
A co-founder of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Ministry at the Cathedral of St. Francis, Julie also drove the homebound to church and the grocery store. Julie was generous with her resources, donating to a wide variety of charitable organizations.
Julie is survived by sisters Elizabeth (Tom) Dunn, of Essex Junction, Vermont, and Terry (Pat) Rivers, of Burlington, Vermont; brothers David (Marcie) Rowe of San Diego, California, and Paul (Karen) Rowe, of York, Pennsylvania, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Cathedral in Metuchen on November 18, 2019 at 10:15 am and interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen. There will be no calling hours. Condolences may be sent to the AW Rich Funeral Home Essex Junction http://awrfh.com/.
